Cloistered

Violet held tight to Ari’s neck as they ascended into the clouds. The lift shuddered, jerking upward swiftly but not smoothly enough to keep her stomach from lurching. After a wave of vertigo had slammed into her, she’d stopped looking down. Violet craned her neck up instead. While standing at the mountain’s base, the rust-red peak appeared to go on forever. Now, if she squinted, she could almost see the top. What would they find up there? Who would be there to greet them?

Her belly wobbled more furiously the longer she lingered over the question. Sure, Ryon was amazing, but would the rest of his people be so welcoming? It was clear they led a sheltered existence on this mountaintop. They might not be happy to admit strangers into their midst.

More than that, they were practically fugitives. How would his people react when they learned they’d been driven there out of desperation? That the men hunting them were certain to follow them inland?

Ryon had been so insistent that they’d be safe… but would they really? Her gaze trailed across the steep rock wall. It seemed nearly impossible to scale this mountainside. The longer they ascended, the more it baffled her that Ryon had managed it. But if he could climb it, then what was to say the masked couldn’t as well?

Violet saw the summit clearly now. Bobbing lights flickered along the edge, enough that she suspected the help Ryon asked for had arrived in force. As the lift jerked up the remaining length, she drew in a deep breath and shoved her apprehension aside.

A group of men rushed forward as the lift cleared the cliffside. A few not holding torches grabbed the contraption, tugging it forward. The heavy box settled on the clifftop with a mighty thump. Violet scanned the strangers, her heart twinging when she didn’t spot Ryon among them.

“Violet.” Ryon’s voice made her twist so quickly she nearly tumbled off Ari’s back. Ryon left the trio of robed men he’d been chatting with, half-hidden behind Mena’s big body. He jogged toward the lift, reaching it as the men tugged the gate open and Ari barreled out onto the mountaintop.

Ari tore off directly for his sister and didn’t stop until he was close enough to rub hides with her. Ryon flashed a bemused grin, and after a few soft words for the men hovering around the lift, he turned and hurried to her side again.

Violet struggled to slide off Ari’s back. The hatchling seemed to have forgotten to crouch down to let her off in his eagerness to reunite with his sister.

“Here.” Ryon held out his arms. “Let me help you.”

“Thanks.” Violet reached for him, and with a gulp, she leaped. Ryon caught her easily, and their gazes collided as he slowly lowered her. Tingles lit her skin where his fingers gently gripped her waist.

“You all right?” he asked quietly, making no move to release her even after her boots were firmly on the ground.

She nodded, unable to tear her eyes away from his.
